  • Higher Ed: Science

Tina Salmassi, Ph.D. isa Co Principal Investigator of the A^3 Project.

Dr. Salmassi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at CSULA where she teaches and conducts research. Her areas of expertise include biogeochemical cycling in natural waters, water quality and chemistry, environmental engineering, microbial ecology and environmental microbiology. She studies the natural microbial communities present in soil, water, or on mineral or plant surfaces. In these studies, Dr. Salmassi focuses on the environmental conditions that result in the formation of these communities and the interactions between the bacteria and their natural habitat. Dr. Salmassi has been involved in many collaborative research projects with the California Institute of Technology, where she is an Adjunct Professor, and at California Lutheran University, the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Southern California and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Projects include the cycling of arsenic in water supplies for Los Angeles, the global cycling of carbon, the impacts of global warming on soil ecosystems, and the development of cutting-edge water treatment technologies. She has been involved with research projects totaling over $8.5 million dollars from sources such as the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Salmassi also has experience teaching at the university level and extensive experience in mentoring and advising science and engineering students. Her most active involvements in terms of university governance are in the area of outreach and recruitment.
